At Rochester Dental, our dentists provide dental care for patients of all ages. Each generation of patients has unique dental needs, and Drs. Carmody and Halsey take these factors into consideration with every patient’s visit to our Troy’s dentist’s office.

One of the most popular and protective treatments for tiny teeth are dental sealants. These are a commonly applied intervention forSealants young children on their permanent molars, or the large teeth in the back of the mouth. Sealants are a thin, plastic coating applied to these teeth to prevent dental decay. They act as a shield for your child’s tooth, protecting it against cavity-causing bacteria that can otherwise infiltrate the teeth.

Dental sealants are commonly applied in childhood because a child’s teeth are especially vulnerable to a type of decay called pit and fissure decay. As children are just learning to care for these teeth and fully removing food and plaque may be more difficult. Dental sealants are a method of protecting the teeth from early cavities, so a child is more likely to enjoy a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Our Troy dentists recommend children get dental sealants as soon as these teeth come in. Children will get their first permanent molars between ages 5 and 7. Their second set of permanent molars typically come in between 11 and 14 years old.

Once applied, dental sealants typically last about a decade. They have been used since the 1960s to protect the teeth, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Remember that dental sealants are not the only measures that should be taken to keep your child’s teeth healthy. Make sure your child brushes and flosses regularly, and keeps at least twice-yearly dental appointments at our Troy dentist’s office.
