Would you like to decrease your child's risk of cavities? Sealants offer a simple way to prevent tooth decay. Your Troy, MI, dentists Dr. William Carmody and Dr. Debra Halsey help children and adults maintain good dental health with a variety of dental services.
Why are sealants needed?
Molars and pre-molars, the large teeth at the back of your mouth, are instrumental in chewing. Grooves and pits in the surface of these teeth make it easier to tear, crush and grind food. Unfortunately, the tiny pits also provide the perfect place for cavity-causing plaque to flourish. You can easily remove plaque from most tooth surfaces by brushing, but the pits in molars are pre-molars aren't easily reached by your toothbrush bristles.
Sealants help your children avoid cavities in these teeth by covering the pits and grooves with a protective layer of plastic resin. Your children can still chew normally once sealants are added.
When are sealants recommended?
Sealants are applied to your child's teeth after his or her permanent molars and pre-molars appear. The newly erupted teeth are fragile and more susceptible to decay. Adding sealants helps your child avoid cavities in these teeth.
What happens when my child receives sealants?
Sealants are applied after your child receives a dental cleaning. An etching solution is applied to the teeth to help the sealants adhere to the teeth. The liquid sealants are then applied with a small brush and hardened with a curing light. The entire process only takes a few minutes and is pain-free.
How long do sealants last?
Sealants can last up to a year or more. If your child grinds his or her teeth, the sealants may need to be replaced sooner. Your Troy dentist will check the sealants at every checkup and recommend replacement if needed.
